Questions and answers
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has a long history dating back to 1662, when the British physician Henshaw first used a pressurised chamber to treat patients.
It was not until the 20th century that its full potential was recognised: in 1937, HBO was successfully used to treat decompression sickness. In the 1950s, it was used in cancer and heart surgery. Today, HBO is used in a variety of ways, e.g. for wound healing disorders, neurological diseases, in cancer therapy, orthopaedics and sports medicine, etc.

GENERAL QUESTIONS
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical procedure in which patients are exposed to elevated oxygen levels in a pressurised chamber. This therapy is used to improve oxygen uptake in the tissue and supports various healing processes.
In the pressurised chamber, the ambient pressure is increased while the patient breathes in highly concentrated oxygen. This enables an up to 20-fold increase in the oxygen concentration in the blood, which promotes tissue healing and reduces inflammation.
HBOT is frequently used for the following conditions:
- Wound healing disorders
- Decubitus (pressure sores)
- Radiation damage
- infections
- Gas embolism
- Neurological diseases (e.g. stroke)
- Sports injuries
Patients with certain chronic illnesses, injuries or post-operative healing processes can benefit from HBOT. Healthy people also use the therapy to regenerate and improve performance.
The effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is supported by numerous scientific studies. These show that the therapy increases oxygen uptake in the tissue, accelerates healing processes and reduces inflammation.

USING THE o2air® OXYGEN CHAMBERS
A session in the pressurised chamber usually lasts between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on the treatment and the specific medical need.
Yes, the pressure in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber is well tolerated by most people. During a session, the pressure is increased to 1.3 to 2.5 atmospheres of overpressure (ATA). Slight adaptation symptoms may occur, similar to those experienced when ascending or descending in an aeroplane:
Possible adaptation symptoms:
- Pressure on the ears: Comparable to the feeling during take-off or landing of an aeroplane. This can be compensated for by swallowing, yawning or the Valsalva method.
- Slight tiredness or relaxation: Some people feel relaxed or tired due to the increased oxygen concentration.
- Adaptation to higher pressure: People with sensitive sinuses or chronic ear problems should consult a doctor before the session.
o2air® oxygen chamber chambers are equipped with safety valves to ensure a controlled pressure build-up.
In most o2air® pressurised chambers, no special clothing regulations are required. However, there are some recommendations to maximise comfort and safety:
Recommended clothing and rules of behaviour:
- Comfortable clothing: Wear loose clothing such as T-shirts and tracksuit bottoms.
- No sharp or metallic objects: Sharp objects are not allowed in the chamber to avoid the risk of injury.
- Neutral fragrance: Use neutral perfume and avoid strong smelling foods as odours are more noticeable in the chamber.
Why no special clothing is required:
Since o2air® oxygen chambers distribute oxygen through masks and not in the chamber air, there is no risk of fire as in pure oxygen chambers. Normal everyday clothing is therefore sufficient.
Common accessories (included with o2air® oxygen chambers):
- Oxygen mask: this is required and is worn throughout the session. There are standard and special rebreather-free masks.
- Blindfold (optional): Helps to block out light to promote relaxation.
- Noise cancelling headphones (optional but recommended): Reduce distracting noises and allow you to listen to music or relaxation sounds.
- Comfort equipment: Depending on the chamber model, a visco-foam mattress or a relaxation chair may be available.
- Air cooler (optional): A USB air cooler can help regulate the temperature and increase well-being.
The noticeable effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can vary and depends on various factors, such as the patient’s state of health and the problem being treated.
• After 3-5 sessions: Many people report initial positive effects such as relaxation, better sleep and increased energy.
• After 10-20 sessions: Significant improvements often occur with specific medical problems, such as wound healing or chronic illnesses.
• Long-term effects: For serious health problems, 30 to 40 sessions may be required to achieve significant improvements.
The frequency of sessions depends on the individual’s state of health. General guidelines are We recommend consultation with a doctor or therapist to achieve the optimum effect.
• Per day: Usually one session per day, in acute conditions two sessions per day are also possible under medical supervision.
• Per week: 3 to 5 sessions per week are standard.
• Duration of therapy: A complete therapy comprises 10 to 40 sessions.
A session in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber is considered safe if it is carried out correctly. However, in rare cases, some side effects may occur:
• Pressure on the ears or sinuses: Similar to flying, can easily be equalised by swallowing or yawning.
• Lung problems: These are rare and usually only occur at high pressure levels. Medical clarification is advisable in the case of certain pre-existing conditions.
Yes, jewellery and glasses should be removed before using an oxygen chamber. There are several reasons for this:
1. Safety: Metal objects can generate sparks in an oxygen-rich environment. Removing them minimises this risk.
2. Comfort: Metal objects can become uncomfortable due to the pressure. Glasses can pinch and be uncomfortable.
3. Protect the appliances: jewellery could damage seals or the inner walls of the chamber.
After using a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, a certain amount of time should be allowed for regeneration.
Recommended regeneration time:
• Short regeneration: At least 30 minutes to 1 hour after the session.
• Intensive sport: Wait up to 2 hours for intensive activities.
Why regeneration is important:
• Circulatory adaptation: The increased oxygen content can affect the circulation. Sport could cause dizziness.
• Increased oxygen uptake: A rest phase maximises the regenerative effects.
Yes, the therapy can also be used in children, especially for neurological disorders or to support wound healing. However, it should always be carried out under medical supervision and after consultation.
There is evidence that HBOT can help with mental illnesses such as depression by improving the oxygen supply to the brain and increasing general well-being.
Oxygen therapy is often used after operations to promote wound healing and relieve pain. It accelerates the healing process and reduces post-operative inflammation.
There are specific reasons for exclusion where use is not recommended:
Health complaints:
1. Globular cell anaemia
2. Upper respiratory tract infections
3. Chronic sinusitis
4. Middle ear infections
5. Pulmonary emphysema or pneumothorax
6. Collapsed lung
7. Seizure disorders (epilepsy)
8. Possible pregnancy
Drug exclusion reasons:
• Cisplatin
• Disulphiram (Antabuse)
• Doxorubicin (Adriamycin)
• Bleomycin
Further reasons for exclusion:
People with lung disease, ear problems or heart disease should seek medical advice before use
